Patrick Block Speaks on Adverse Healthcare Incident Mediation

Posted By The Law Offices of Patrick L. Block, P.C. || 25-Jun-2014

Oregon Medical Malpractice Attorney Patrick L. Block recently served as one of the speakers and panelists for the Adverse Healthcare Incident Mediation Training program—an event sponsored by the Oregon Mediation Association (OMA), the Oregon Patient Safety Commission and the ADR Section of the Oregon State Bar. Attorney Block was part of a panel that specifically discussed Adverse Incident Overview on June 23, 2014. The purpose of the two-day event was to help mediators prepare themselves for a new program that is being rolled out by the Oregon Patient Safety Commission—the Early Discussion and Resolution (EDR) program.

According to the Oregon Patient Safety Commission, the EDR process makes it easier for patients (or families of patients) and healthcare providers to join together and reach resolutions outside of court after adverse healthcare incidents occur. An adverse healthcare incident would specifically be an injury or death that was caused by the patient's medical care, as opposed to the patient's initial illness or condition. The EDR program is supposed to begin operating on July 1, 2014. It is being implemented as a result of Senate Bill 483 being signed into law in March 2013. OMA's event provided the training that mediators need in order to be deemed eligible for the Commission's roster of qualified mediators.
